Renewing, Replacing or Updating Your WA Driver's Licence: Fees, Timeframes and What to Do If You Lose It

Getting your licence feels like the finish line — but it isn't quite the end of the paperwork.[cite: 13] Licences expire, wallets get lost, phones and cards go missing on a night out, and life events like moving house or getting married mean your details need updating too.[cite: 13] At Golden Road Driving Academy we get asked about this more than you'd think, usually from parents helping their P-plater figure out “what happens when my licence runs out” or “I lost my card, what now.”[cite: 13]

The good news: Transport WA has made most of this fast and mostly online through DoTDirect.[cite: 13] Here's exactly what it costs, how long it takes, and what to do in each situation — straight from Transport WA's own current pages.[cite: 13]

Renewing your WA driver’s licence[cite: 13]

This section covers renewing a standard (full) driver’s licence — once your provisional period ends, you’re automatically upgraded to a full licence with no test required (we covered that in our P-plate rules guide).[cite: 13] From there, your full licence needs periodic renewal like everyone else’s.[cite: 13]

How early can you renew?[cite: 13]

You can renew as early as six months before your licence expires, so there’s no need to wait until the last minute or risk it lapsing.[cite: 13]

Renewal terms and fees[cite: 13]

Renewal term[cite: 13] Fee[cite: 13]
1 year[cite: 13] $49.40[cite: 13]
5 years[cite: 13] $172.00[cite: 13]

There’s no 10-year renewal option — the longest term you can renew for at one time is five years.[cite: 13]

How to renew[cite: 13]

You’ve got several options, and most don’t require you to leave the house:[cite: 13]

  • Online via DoTDirect or Transport WA’s online payment system (Visa or Mastercard)[cite: 13]
  • By phone on 13 11 56 (only if you don’t need a photo update)[cite: 13]
  • By BPAY®[cite: 13]
  • By mail[cite: 13]
  • In person at a Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) centre, regional agent, or an Australia Post PhotoPoint location[cite: 13]

The photo and signature catch[cite: 13]

Every 10 years, Transport WA requires you to update your photograph and signature — and that part can’t be done online or by phone.[cite: 13] If your renewal notice flags that you’re due, you’ll need to attend in person at a service centre, regional agent or PhotoPoint with acceptable ID.[cite: 13]

How long does it take?[cite: 13]

Once you’ve renewed, allow 10–15 business days for your new card to arrive in the mail.[cite: 13]

What if your licence has already expired?[cite: 13]

Life gets busy and renewal notices get missed.[cite: 13] What happens next depends on how long it’s been:[cite: 13]

How long expired[cite: 13] What you need to do[cite: 13]
Less than 6 months[cite: 13] Renew as normal through any of the channels above[cite: 13]
6 months to 5 years[cite: 13] Attend a DVS service centre in person with primary and secondary ID, a completed application form, an eyesight test result, and the renewal fee[cite: 13]
More than 5 years[cite: 13] You’ll need to reapply from scratch, including sitting the theory test and a Practical Driving Assessment (PDA) again[cite: 13]

That last scenario is a big deal — if your card has been sitting in a drawer for more than five years, you’re effectively starting over like a new learner.[cite: 13] It’s worth renewing well before your expiry date to avoid that entirely.[cite: 13]

Replacing a lost, stolen or damaged licence[cite: 13]

This is probably the most common “panic” call we get — someone’s lost their wallet, or their card’s gone through the wash.[cite: 13] Here’s what it actually costs and involves.[cite: 13]

Replacement fees[cite: 13]

Situation[cite: 13] Fee[cite: 13]
Standard replacement[cite: 13] $33.30[cite: 13]
Pensioner or senior concession[cite: 13] $16.65[cite: 13]
Aged (Commonwealth Seniors) pensioner[cite: 13] Free[cite: 13]
Stolen, with a WA Police report[cite: 13] Free[cite: 13]
Damaged/destroyed in a declared natural disaster[cite: 13] Free[cite: 13]

If it’s lost or damaged[cite: 13]

You can usually apply online through DoTDirect and pay the replacement fee, or apply by post using Form DL26 (Application for Replacement/Certified Copy of Driver’s Licence) with certified copies of your ID, sent to Driver and Vehicle Services, GPO Box R1290, Perth WA 6844.[cite: 13]

You’ll need to attend in person instead if:[cite: 13]

  • You’ve changed your address in the last 7 days[cite: 13]
  • You’ve already ordered an online replacement in the past 12 months[cite: 13]
  • You need a name change or photo update at the same time[cite: 13]
  • Your licence was stolen[cite: 13]

If it’s stolen[cite: 13]

You must report it to the Western Australian Police Force and get a WA police report number first — Transport WA only accepts WA Police reports for a free replacement, so an interstate or overseas police report doesn’t qualify for the fee waiver.[cite: 13]

Natural disaster damage[cite: 13]

If your licence was damaged or destroyed during a declared emergency or state of emergency, you can apply for a free replacement in person, using a statutory declaration (Form E47A).[cite: 13]

When you can’t replace it[cite: 13]

You’re not eligible to replace your licence if you’re currently disqualified, suspended, or otherwise prohibited from driving, or if you have pending charges affecting your licence — replacement isn’t a way around a suspension.[cite: 13]

Changing your name or address on your licence[cite: 13]

Two separate situations, two slightly different rules.[cite: 13]

Changing your address[cite: 13]

By law, you must let Driver and Vehicle Services know within 21 days of moving.[cite: 13] It costs nothing to update your address on file — you only pay a fee if you also want a brand-new physical card printed (the same $33.30/$16.65 replacement fees above apply).[cite: 13] You can update it:[cite: 13]

  • Online through DoTDirect, or the dedicated online change-of-address service if you don’t have an account[cite: 13]
  • By post or in person using Form C4 (Change of Personal Details)[cite: 13]

Changing your name[cite: 13]

There’s no fee just to update your name on Transport WA’s records, but if you want a new card printed with your new name, the standard replacement fee ($33.30, or $16.65 with a pensioner/senior concession) applies.[cite: 13] Unlike an address change, this one has to be done in person at a DVS service centre or regional agent.[cite: 13] Bring:[cite: 13]

  • A completed Form C4[cite: 13]
  • One primary and one secondary proof-of-identity document[cite: 13]
  • Original supporting documentation showing the name change — a marriage certificate, deed poll, or a birth certificate from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages — with at least one document linking your old and new name and carrying your signature[cite: 13]

Quick answers[cite: 13]

Do P-plate drivers need to renew their licence?[cite: 13]

No — your provisional licence automatically becomes a full licence at the end of your provisional period, with no test and no renewal application needed.[cite: 13] Standard renewal (and the fees above) only kicks in once you’re on a full licence.[cite: 13] See our P-plate rules guide for the full provisional-period rundown.[cite: 13]

Can I do all of this through DoTDirect or ServiceWA?[cite: 13]

Most of it, yes — renewals, address changes and most replacements can be done online through DoTDirect.[cite: 13] We’ve written a full explainer on setting up DoTDirect, myID and Learn&Log if you haven’t set your account up yet.[cite: 13]

What if I need my licence urgently for a test or job?[cite: 13]

Apply for your replacement as early as possible — Transport WA doesn’t publish a guaranteed express turnaround, so build in time rather than leaving it until the day you need it.[cite: 13]

Is renewing cheaper over 5 years than paying yearly?[cite: 13]

Yes — five separate 1-year renewals at $49.40 would total $247.00, versus $172.00 for a single 5-year renewal, so locking in the longer term saves money if you don’t expect your circumstances (like a medical condition affecting your licence) to change.[cite: 13]

The bottom line[cite: 13]

None of this is complicated once you know the steps — renew up to 6 months early, keep your address current within 21 days of moving, and know that a stolen licence needs a police report before Transport WA will waive the replacement fee.[cite: 13] Most of it can be handled from your phone through DoTDirect, and the exceptions (photo updates, name changes) just mean one trip to a service centre.[cite: 13]

If you’re still working towards your P’s and want to make sure test day goes smoothly the first time, that’s exactly what we’re here for.[cite: 13]
