How many driving lessons will I need?
Every learner is different. Use this as a guide, then book a first lesson and we'll give you an honest estimate.
Never driven before
8–15+ lessons
Most beginners need around 8 to 15 or more professional lessons to master car control, observation and manoeuvres, alongside regular practice with a supervising driver.
Already learning with family
5–10 lessons
Sharpen your skills, fix any gaps and get ready for your PDA (your driving test) with an instructor who knows the local test routes.
Confident or licensed overseas
1–5 lessons
Polish WA test skills, reverse parallel parking and local road rules, or unlearn old habits before your test.
Practising with family or friends?
Great. Regular practice with a supervising driver helps you progress faster, and those hours count towards your logbook.
No one to practise with? No problem. Many of our learners don't, and we can guide you from your first lesson to test day.
The WA rule
Under 25? You must log at least 50 supervised driving hours, including 5 at night, in your Learner Log Book or the Learn&Log app (ServiceWA) before your driving test. Lessons with us count.
Transport WA says 50 hours is only the minimum: get as much practice as you can in different roads, weather and traffic. Learners 25 and over don't need to log hours.

Gift certificates can be used on any lesson, night or Sunday lesson, mock test or test day package, but not on lesson packs. One code per booking. The test day in the P-Plate Pack can be used once the learner is eligible to sit their PDA (driving test): Ls (learner's permit) held for at least 6 months, logbook hours done and Hazard Perception Test passed. Sunday driving lessons
Busy with school or work during the week? Learn on a Sunday. Every Sunday lesson is a full 2 hours, so there's time to warm up, drive a complete test-style route and practise in real weekend traffic.
- 2 hours, every time. Sunday lessons are 120 minutes (2-hour minimum).
- Start times from 9:45am to 2:45pm. Pick the time that suits your weekend.

Night & after-hours driving lessons
Build confidence driving after dark: glare, headlights, reduced visibility and judging distance in changing traffic.
Where we meet: night lessons start and finish at Joondalup or Butler train station. Prefer home pick-up? Email us before you book. We can arrange it within our service area.
WA learners under 25 need at least 50 supervised driving hours before their PDA (driving test), including at least 5 hours at night between sunset and sunrise. Learners 25 and over don't need to log hours.
Perth sunset is about 5:20pm in June and 7:25pm in January. In summer, pick a start time after sunset so your lesson counts as night driving.

How many driving lessons will I need?
Every learner is different. Complete beginners usually need around 8 to 15 or more professional lessons, plus regular practice with a supervising driver if they have one. Learners with some experience often need 5 to 10 lessons, and confident drivers or overseas licence holders may need 1 to 5 lessons to polish WA test skills. Book a first lesson and we'll give you an honest estimate.
Do you sell driving lesson gift vouchers?
Yes. Golden Road gift certificates come in $100, $150 and $200 and are emailed straight after you pay by card. They can be used on any lesson, mock test or test day package, the balance carries over to the next booking, and they are valid for 2 years. To gift a lesson pack instead, choose the pack in our gift section; packs can also be paid with Afterpay.
Which driving lesson option should I choose?
Brand-new learners usually do best with a structured lesson pack. If you already have supervised driving experience, a single lesson or the 6-lesson pack may suit you. If your PDA is already booked, book a Mock Driving Test before choosing a test-day option.
Do you offer weekend driving lessons?
Yes. We offer 2-hour automatic driving lessons on Sundays for $170, with start times from 9:45am to 2:45pm. Sunday lessons are a 2-hour minimum and spots are limited, so book early.
Do you offer automatic or manual lessons?
Golden Road Driving Academy provides automatic driving lessons only.
Do you pick learners up?
Standard lessons can start from an agreed location within our service area. Test Day: Pick-Up & Drop-Off collects you from home and drops you back after your test. Test Day: Meet at Centre and Test Car Only start at the Butler or Joondalup test centre.
What car will I learn in?
All lessons are in Golden Road Driving Academy's dual-control automatic training car, the same car you can use for your PDA.
Can I use one lesson pack for weekday, night and Sunday lessons?
Yes. The Anytime Driving Lesson Pack gives you 10 hours of lesson credit for $850 that you can use for weekday lessons, night lessons from 6pm, 2-hour Sunday lessons and mock driving tests at the Butler or Joondalup DoT centre, in any mix. Each booking uses the length of that lesson, so you need at least 2 hours of credit left to book a Sunday lesson. Test day packages are booked separately. Like all our packs, it is valid for 2 years.
How long are lesson packs valid?
Lesson packs are valid for 2 years from purchase.
Do night lessons count towards my 5 night hours?
For learners under 25, supervised driving between sunset and sunrise counts towards the 5 night hours when it's recorded in your learner log book or Learn&Log. In summer, choose a start time after sunset.
Can I pay with Afterpay?
Yes. You can pay for selected lesson packs and test day packages in 4 interest-free payments with Afterpay. Tap the Afterpay button on the pack you want (see lesson packs), then email us your receipt and we'll send you a booking code. Same price as paying by card.
