Learn&Log, DoTDirect and myID Explained: The Digital Tools Every WA Learner Driver Needs

If you've started your Ls in WA recently, you've probably already bumped into a bit of an alphabet soup: Learn&Log, DoTDirect, myID, ServiceWA.[cite: 8] It's a lot of new jargon for someone who just wants to get their 50 hours done and book a PDA.[cite: 8]

Here's the good news: it's actually pretty simple once someone explains it properly — and there's been a genuine change worth knowing about, because the standalone Learn&Log app that a lot of learners (and parents) might remember has actually been switched off.[cite: 8] We've broken down exactly what each tool does, what you need to set it up, and how they all fit together, straight from Transport WA's current guidance.[cite: 8]

Why This Actually Matters[cite: 8]

Every learner in WA has to log at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including a minimum of 5 hours at night, before they're eligible to book their Practical Driving Assessment (PDA).[cite: 8] How you record those hours has gone almost entirely digital, and the digital option has recently moved house.[cite: 8] If you (or your supervising driver) go looking for the old standalone “Learn&Log” app on the App Store or Google Play, you won't find it — it was retired on 11 August 2025.[cite: 8] Knowing where it actually lives now, and what you need to log in, saves a headache in the weeks before your PDA.[cite: 8]

Learn&Log: Your Digital Logbook (Now Inside ServiceWA)[cite: 8]

Learn&Log is Transport WA's digital tool for recording your supervised driving hours — Transport WA describes it as “a quick and easy way to digitally log, submit, and track your supervised driving hours.”[cite: 8] It used to be its own standalone app.[cite: 8] It isn't anymore.[cite: 8]

Learn&Log now lives inside the ServiceWA app, available on the App Store (iOS 15 and above) and Google Play (Android 6 and above).[cite: 8] If you already have ServiceWA installed for other WA Government services, make sure it's updated to the latest version before you try to use Learn&Log.[cite: 8]

Once you're in, Learn&Log gives you:[cite: 8]

  • A progress tracker that adds up your logged hours automatically — no more manually tallying entries.[cite: 8]
  • Quick select trip details, so recurring information (your usual car, your usual supervising driver) doesn't need re-entering every trip.[cite: 8]
  • Educational resources covering assessment concepts and manoeuvres, built into the app.[cite: 8]
  • Offline recording, so a dead spot on a country drive doesn't stop you logging the trip — it validates and adds to your total once you're back online (as long as the vehicle and supervisor were already set up in the app beforehand).[cite: 8]

What You Need Before You Can Use It[cite: 8]

To use Learn&Log, Transport WA requires that you:[cite: 8]

  • Hold a valid C or R-E class learner's permit issued by WA's Department of Transport (DTMI), and not already hold a C or R-E class licence.[cite: 8]
  • Have a DoTDirect account with two-factor authentication (2FA) turned on.[cite: 8]
  • Hold at least a “Standard” strength Digital Identity through myID (the Australian Government's digital ID system — the current name for what used to be called myGovID).[cite: 8]

That myID piece trips a lot of learners up, so it's worth doing first, before you even open Learn&Log:[cite: 8]

  1. Download the myID app and verify your identity to at least Standard (IP2) strength.[cite: 8] You'll need at least two identity documents from a list that includes your passport, driver's licence, birth certificate, visa, ImmiCard, citizenship certificate or Medicare card.[cite: 8]
  2. Make sure the name and date of birth on your myID match your DTMI customer (DoTDirect) record exactly.[cite: 8] If they don't line up, you'll need to either update your details with DTMI or pick a different verified name in the myID app before you can link the two.[cite: 8]
  3. Link your myID to your DoTDirect account.[cite: 8] Note: this only works for a full DoTDirect account — not the “basic” account type used solely for NDIS Worker Screening Checks.[cite: 8]

DoTDirect: Your Online Transport Account[cite: 8]

DoTDirect is the separate piece underneath all of this — it's Transport WA's general online account system, and it's worth having regardless of Learn&Log, because it's also how you'll eventually book your PDA online.[cite: 8] According to Transport WA, DoTDirect “makes it easier to pay your licences and manage details online.”[cite: 8]

Through DoTDirect you can:[cite: 8]

  • Book a Practical Driving Assessment[cite: 8]
  • Pay for licences, registrations and infringements online[cite: 8]
  • Check your driver's licence status[cite: 8]
  • View your demerit points[cite: 8]
  • Update your address details[cite: 8]

To register for DoTDirect, you'll need:[cite: 8]

  • A unique email address[cite: 8]
  • Your WA driver's licence or learner's permit number[cite: 8]
  • A vehicle licence or registration code (if you don't have one handy, Transport WA can mail you one within about 5 days)[cite: 8]
  • A username and password of your choosing[cite: 8]

You can register online at Transport WA's DoTDirect portal, in person at a DTMI Service Centre or regional agent (bring original primary and secondary proof-of-identity documents plus a completed application form, E111A), or over the phone on 13 11 56 using your vehicle plate and VIN, or your last driver's licence renewal payment details, to verify who you are.[cite: 8] Once it's set up, DoTDirect uses SMS-based two-factor authentication every time you log in.[cite: 8]

Putting It All Together: A Step-by-Step Setup[cite: 8]

If you're starting completely from scratch, here's the order that avoids the most re-work:[cite: 8]

  1. Get your myID to Standard strength in the myID app (two ID documents).[cite: 8]
  2. Register for a DoTDirect account (online, in person, or by phone).[cite: 8]
  3. Link your myID to your DoTDirect account, making sure your name and date of birth match exactly across both.[cite: 8]
  4. Download or update ServiceWA, and log in using your linked DoTDirect / myID credentials.[cite: 8]
  5. Open Learn&Log inside ServiceWA and start logging trips.[cite: 8]

Logging a Trip: How It Actually Works[cite: 8]

When you're ready to drive, tap “Log a new trip” in Learn&Log.[cite: 8] The app shows a few safety reminders before recording starts.[cite: 8] Transport WA's guidance is that the supervising driver should start the trip in the app before the learner starts driving — while the car is still safely parked — and then set the phone aside for the drive, rather than handling it while the learner is behind the wheel.[cite: 8]

Trips can be paused, resumed or abandoned if plans change.[cite: 8] Each logged trip shows a status:[cite: 8]

Status[cite: 8] Meaning[cite: 8]
Logging (grey)[cite: 8] Trip is currently in progress[cite: 8]
Incomplete (yellow)[cite: 8] Trip was started but not properly finished/signed off[cite: 8]
Logged (green)[cite: 8] Trip is complete and counted toward your 50 hours[cite: 8]
Invalid (red)[cite: 8] Trip couldn't be validated and won't count[cite: 8]

At the end of the drive, the supervising driver signs off directly on the learner's phone — they don't need their own account or their own copy of the app.[cite: 8]

What If You've Got a Paper Logbook?[cite: 8]

A paper logbook is still a completely valid way to record your hours, and Transport WA continues to support it.[cite: 8] If you started on paper and want to switch to Learn&Log partway through, you can transfer your existing paper hours in during setup — but this can only be done once, so make sure your paper log is accurate and complete before you do it.[cite: 8] If you end up with a mix of paper and digital records, bring both along to your PDA.[cite: 8]

One more thing worth knowing: once you actually get your licence, Learn&Log access is automatically switched off within 72 hours — so if you want to keep a copy of your trip history for your own records, do it before then.[cite: 8]

Coming Soon (Not Yet Live): A Digital Driver's Licence[cite: 8]

While researching this, we also came across news that Transport WA and ServiceWA are planning a digital driver's licence, stored in a digital wallet inside the ServiceWA app, with both digital and physical licences to be legally recognised once it launches.[cite: 8] As of now, though, this is still in development, with a trial planned for early 2027 and full availability expected by the end of 2027, subject to how that trial goes.[cite: 8] It'll be optional — you'll always be able to keep using your physical card — but it's not something a current learner or P-plater can use yet, so keep carrying your physical Ls permit or licence card in the meantime.[cite: 8]

Quick Reference[cite: 8]

Tool[cite: 8] What it's for[cite: 8] What you need to use it[cite: 8]
myID[cite: 8] Your Australian Government digital identity[cite: 8] Two proof-of-identity documents (passport, driver's licence, birth certificate, visa, ImmiCard, citizenship certificate or Medicare card), verified to Standard strength[cite: 8]
DoTDirect[cite: 8] Your Transport WA online account — pay, book, check status[cite: 8] Email address, licence/permit number, vehicle licence or rego code[cite: 8]
Learn&Log (inside ServiceWA)[cite: 8] Digitally logging your 50 hours (incl. 5 night hours)[cite: 8] Valid C/R-E learner's permit, DoTDirect account with 2FA, Standard-strength myID[cite: 8]
Digital driver's licence[cite: 8] A licence stored in your phone's digital wallet[cite: 8] Not yet available — trial planned for early 2027[cite: 8]

Getting these three set up properly before you start clocking up hours means there's no scramble later trying to remember a password or match up ID details the week before your PDA.[cite: 8] It's a bit of admin up front, but it makes logging every lesson — with us or with mum and dad — genuinely quick.[cite: 8]

If you'd rather spend your practice time actually driving instead of wrestling with an app, that's exactly what we're here for.[cite: 8]
